Intersec 2015 Review

Intersec 2015 – The biggest event in the show’s history

If you have even the slightest interest in the Middle East then The World Trade Centre in Dubai from 18-20 January was the place to be, and Intersec 2015 was the show to be at.

His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Intersec’s patron, opened the show in style with Frau Brigitte Zypries, German Parliamentary State Secretary from the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy.

The 17th edition of the global trade event was bigger than any before, seeing an increase of 10% in floor space with over 300 companies exhibiting for the first time. There were over 1250 exhibitors from over 54 countries and 11 separate country pavilions, and exhibitors at the trade show included the top 10 commercial security providers, all showcasing over 2000 innovative new brands.
Supporting the show was the annual Intersec conference series, including Fire and Safety, Commercial Security, Occupational Safety and Safety Design in Buildings. The series included more than 35 high-profile international speakers over 40 power packed sessions across the three-day event.

Official show statistics are yet to be released, but we know day one saw a 10% increase in footfall over 2014 and the perception of the Security Media Publishing team on the ground was of an increased buzz of excitement throughout the event.

Michael Dehn, Group Exhibitions Director Messe Frankfurt Middle East GmbH said, “2015 has shown us tremendous growth on the show floor, and we see tremendous response as well from the visitor side. Intersec is all about international visitors, international exhibitors, and we have had a tremendous response so far.”

However, rather than just taking our word for it, find out what the show’s visitors and exhibitors had to say.

Chris Williams, Wavestore
“Intersec 2015 is the launch show for our v6, which is new software that allows us to power down drives that are not being written to or read. We’re also supporting our partner Aligntech and developing relationships in the region.
“We’ve had very good conversations with new customers from around the region, there’s a lot of optimism, a real desire for good technology, and new partners are coming, wanting to join with us. I think we have to be back next year, because people have come here to see and meet with us and that’s really very flattering to see that we can compete with the big guys here and they actually make a beeline to come and see us.”

Mark Rees, 360 Vision
“It’s been a superb show, as ever. It’s our fifth year here and we’ve probably had more quality footfall, it’s been absolutely fantastic. We’ve been able to introduce new products to the region and it’s been brilliant.
“360 Vision products have been on display at various partner stands, including Maxxess Systems with access control integration and VMS integration, we have our OEM agreement with Indigo Vision as well, we’re also on the G4S stand who are an important integrator for us in this market, and what was cool about G4S is that they were able to do it in UAE colours as well. We’ve seen continuation of existing relationship as well as development of new business opportunities.”

Jehangire Postwalla, Firmax Middle East
“This year’s show has been busy for us, and we’ve launched a very interesting home automation product which combines one of our strengths which is video door forms with IP technology connecting it to the KNX Bus that allows you to connect any KNX product on the market. This opens things up to the user as they are not forced to buy a particular device.”

Daniel, WCCTV
“It’s been a really good show, it’s been busy most days and we’ve seen a high quality of visitor, we’ve also managed to put pen to paper on some interesting projects that we think are going to help take the company forward in the Middle East.
“We came under the impression the show probably wasn’t a must attend, but I must admit having been here for the last three days, knowing what we know now coming away from here I think it’s almost guaranteed that we’ll be here again next year.”

Peter Nichols, BSIA delegation
“We were at the first show when it launched almost 17 years ago with only a small number of UK companies. Then it was half of one hall and the UK pavilion was about half of that, since then it has ballooned into a major international event, not just a regional event. This year we’ve brought 90 companies over four UK pavilions in the security, homeland, policing, fire and the safety section. 40 of those 90 are in the commercial security section, and we’re very pleased to be involved again.
“100% of the companies we have brought to the event have been pleased to be here. The amount of project work that is talked about at this event is huge and there is nowhere like it in the rest of the world. Other international events in Europe and the UK don’t match it, the potential for project work here is without equal.”

Jeremy Knight, Zaun
“It’s been a very positive event for us this year, we’ve seen a lot of people we expected to turn up, customers we already have, as well as a lot of prospective clients from regions we’ve not even gone into yet, so it’s been pretty good for us.
“In terms of the eyelinks brand, the reception has been good because we’ve been able to project that we can provide a one stop shop for security solutions, so it’s actually been very, very positive. Intersec is definitely a must attend event and it’s been very positive for us.”

Martin Cowley, IDIS Europe
“It’s been a fantastic Intersec for us, this is a very important show for us, especially in this part of the world. We launched a year ago and we’ve never looked back. We got immediate business, and this year has been an increase, we think, of around about 20% footfall on last year, which is just incredible, you can’t beat that.”

Soren Kannov, Teleste
“All our participants said go and check out Intersec and see if you want to exhibit next year, and I think this is very, very good and we definitely will.”

New product launches
Many exhibitors used Intersec to launch new products and capabilities, including the following.

  • Arecont showcased its new stellar low-light technology and omni-direction camera , which is a new 4-lens camera with the flexibility of moving the lenses around, for the first time in the Middle East. Visitors to the stand could also see new products in Canon’s Megaball series, which have the pana-morph innervision lenses; new dual sensor as well as a wide-dynamic range 3 megapixel sensor and a new 4k product using H264 compression.
  • Canon launched an updated range of mid-range products, the VBM and the VBH series including a fixed box, indoor dome, outdoor dome and a 340 degree pan tilt zoom. They all have updated firmware providing improved bandwidth control and dual streaming as well as improved analytics.
  • Ipsotek launched a new facial recognition system that can store all faces that the system sees over a period of time, and that could be typically 30 days or 60 days. The system can then be presented with a completely new face and it will tell you if that person has been in the facility in the last 30 or 60 days, providing video clips in each instance and show where they were and what they were doing.
  • Optex launched five new products at Intersec 2015. Its new long-range microwave server for external perimeter applications was showcased, as was new people counting technology that had been developed by its Japan offices, along with a wireless video intercom system for the residential market. Its final launch was an anti-tailgating solution, which is new camera technology being used in data centres and high security applications.
  • Naffco launched a new, world leading cloud controlled water pump capability.
  • G4S, in its second year at Intersec, had part of its stand displaying UAV technology, which sees far more demand in the Middle East than other regions. Where traditionally UAV’s were used for remote site monitoring such as pipelines and oil installations, trends now suggest that there is more demand for inner-city surveillance from UAV’s, protecting large perimeters and high value buildings.
